Names as the assistants wrote them, grouped when they meant the same business. One run per question: answers change from run to run, so treat this as a snapshot. We are not affiliated with any business listed and don't rank or endorse them. How we measure
What the answers show about tutoring services in Austin
Our data On October 14 we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot six questions a parent in Austin might ask when looking for a tutor for a school-age child. All 24 answers came back, and together they named 54 different tutoring services and programs. 29 of them were named only once. It was one run per question, so read the counts as a snapshot, not a ranking.
Four were named by all four assistants: Austin Learning Center in 15 of 24 answers, Mathnasium in 10, Kastner Hill Learning in 6 and GradePower Learning in 5. JB Tutoring also reached 10 answers, but never from Gemini. Huntington Learning Center and the Austin Public Library VICTORY Tutorial Program were named in 6 answers each.
The answers mixed different kinds of providers in the same list: a local learning center, a national franchise, a public library program and an online marketplace could appear side by side.
Chains, local centers and platforms
National franchises were well represented: Mathnasium (10 answers), Huntington Learning Center (6), GradePower Learning (5), Club Z! and Kumon (4 each) and Sylvan Learning (3). Next to them stood local businesses such as Austin Learning Center, JB Tutoring and Kastner Hill Learning. Online platforms and marketplaces appeared too, including Wyzant, Varsity Tutors, Care.com, Thumbtack and Superprof, as well as nonprofit and library-based online help such as UPchieve.
Asked for alternatives to Sylvan Learning, Google AI Mode and Copilot each named Sylvan itself first; ChatGPT and Gemini left it out. In this one question, the named company appeared first in two assistants' answers.
What parents asked about
The question about kids with ADHD brought many names that appeared nowhere else, and Club Z! was the one name three assistants shared. In the question about affordable tutoring, ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini all named the Austin Public Library VICTORY Tutorial Program first, and Google AI Mode added online help offered through nonprofits and libraries, such as UPchieve and Brainfuse HelpNow. When parents asked for the most reliable parent reviews, Mathnasium was named by all four assistants, and first by three of them.
Google Maps: high stars, modest review counts
Our data 4 of the 6 Google AI Mode answers came as Google Maps places, 17 tutoring businesses in total. They averaged 4.92 stars, and 94 percent had 4.5 stars or more. The median place had 40 reviews; the one with the fewest had 3.
That does not show why a particular business was included. It records the review counts in these places: the median was 40 and the smallest count was 3.
Which websites the answers cite for tutoring services
Our data ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Copilot attached source links to all 6 of their answers; Gemini to none. The most-cited website was jbtutoring.com (6 of 24 answers), followed by the Austin school district's site austinisd.org (5). trustanalytica.org, ruvimo.com, austinlearningcenter.com, huntingtonhelps.com and sylvanlearning.com were cited in 4 answers each, and the Austin Public Library site in 3. Club Z!, Tutorax, Tutor Doctor and Yelp followed with 2 each.
So the sources were a mix of tutoring businesses' own sites, franchise sites, review and list sites, and public pages from the school district and the library. For a tutor, this means the school district's and library's pages can appear in the same answer as your own site.
Where tutoring services are usually listed and reviewed (advice): the Google Business Profile (it feeds Google Maps), Yelp, Nextdoor, tutoring marketplaces such as Wyzant, Care.com and Thumbtack, school and PTA resource lists, and local parent groups and newsletters.
Related snapshots of what the assistants named: language schools in Denver and daycare centers in Atlanta.
How parents ask AI assistants about tutoring in Austin
Our six questions covered a general recommendation, kids with ADHD, affordability, reliable parent reviews, availability this week and alternatives to Sylvan Learning. Parents usually add the grade, the subject, the test and the neighborhood. Questions worth testing, written the way parents type them:
- "Algebra 1 tutor for a 9th grader in Round Rock, after school, in person"
- "Reading tutor for a second grader with dyslexia in South Austin"
- "SAT prep tutor near Westlake High School, small group or one on one"
- "Tutor who knows the STAAR math test for a 5th grader in Pflugerville"
- "Spanish-speaking tutor for middle school science in East Austin"
Use the subjects, grades and neighborhoods you actually serve when testing your own questions.
What a tutoring service can check to show up in AI answers
Advice: these checks are concrete and most take an afternoon. None of them can promise a mention; they make it easier for parents, and anyone summarizing your service, to understand what you offer.
- List subjects, grades and tests. Math, reading, science, SAT, ACT, STAAR: say which subjects and grade levels you cover, as text, with a page each for the main ones.
- Describe support for learning differences only if it is real. One question asked about ADHD. If your tutors are trained for ADHD or dyslexia, say how; if not, leave it out.
- Show prices. One question asked for affordable tutoring, and a public library program was named first by three assistants. Price per session, packages and any assessment fee tell a parent what they get.
- Say when a child can start. One question asked for a tutor available this week. Say whether there is a free first session or assessment and how soon you can schedule it.
- Give location and format. In-home, at your center, at the library or online, and the Austin neighborhoods and suburbs you cover, such as Round Rock, Cedar Park or Pflugerville, written out.
- Introduce your tutors. Names, subjects, qualifications and background checks, as text. Parents want to know who will sit with their child.
- Keep parent reviews and profiles current. Ask parents for a Google review when they see progress, and check your Yelp and marketplace profiles for current subjects and prices.
How to check whether ChatGPT names your tutoring service
Write down five or six questions parents would ask, with Austin or their neighborhood, the grade and the subject, and ask several assistants. Note who is named, in which order, and which websites are cited, then repeat after a few weeks, because answers change. CheckAI checks your own customer questions across the same four assistants and shows the names and cited websites for every answer; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free. Our guide on how to check if ChatGPT names your business walks through the manual version.
