Names as the assistants wrote them, grouped when they meant the same business. One run per question: answers change from run to run, so treat this as a snapshot. We are not affiliated with any business listed and don't rank or endorse them. How we measure

What ChatGPT and other assistants named for Phoenix bakeries

Our data On October 14 we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot six questions a customer looking for a bakery in Phoenix might ask. All 24 answers came back, and together they named 55 different bakeries and shops. 31 of those were named only once, and only 4 were named by all four assistants. Most bakeries that appeared at all appeared in a single answer.

The most-named businesses were still far from every answer. Proof Bread was named in 8 of 24 answers, by all four assistants. JL Patisserie and La Purísima Bakery followed with 7 each, also named by all four, and Noble Bread with 5. Balkan Bakery was also in 7 answers, but only from three assistants, four of them from Google AI Mode. This is one run per question, so read the counts as a snapshot, not a ranking.

Each assistant also had names of its own. Copilot named Urban Cookies in 4 of its 6 answers, twice as its first name, and no other assistant named it at all. Copilot gave the longest lists, 34 names across its answers, against 31 for Google AI Mode, 25 for Gemini and 24 for ChatGPT.

Broad and specific questions behaved differently

For the broad question about fresh pastries and bread, all four answers named both Proof Bread and JL Patisserie. For the question about custom birthday cakes for children with allergy-friendly options, the picture was the opposite: the four answers named 13 different businesses, and none was named by more than two assistants. The four answers did not agree on the names for that specific need.

The question about a bakery open right now for quick pickup stretched the category. The answers named donut shops, cookie shops and a bakery chain, and Gemini named a large commercial bread bakery. In the question about affordable bakeries, three assistants named the outlet store of a packaged-bread brand.

Google AI Mode answered with Google Maps places

Our data 5 of Google AI Mode's 6 answers came as Google Maps places: 24 bakeries in total. Their average rating was 4.7 stars, all of them had 4.5 stars or more, and the median number of reviews was 418. The bakery with the fewest reviews had 39.

That does not show that ratings are the reason a bakery was shown. It records one shared feature of the places in this run: every one was rated 4.5 or higher.

Where the names come from: websites cited for Phoenix bakeries

Our data ChatGPT and Copilot attached source links to all 6 of their answers. Google AI Mode did so twice and Gemini once, so the cited websites come mostly from ChatGPT and Copilot.

The most-cited website was restaurantji.com, a restaurant review directory (6 of 24 answers). Then came news sites and city guides: axios.com, phoenix.eater.com and visitphoenix.com with 5 each, phoenixnewtimes.com and diningout.com with 4, and tripadvisor.com with 4. Reddit was cited twice.

Bakeries' own websites mattered for specific questions. For the allergy-friendly cake question, ChatGPT cited 8 websites, most of them sites of individual cake and allergy-friendly bakeries. For the question about independent alternatives to Panera Bread, it cited the sites of Proof Bread, Noble Bread and JL Patisserie. Broad questions leaned on food guides; specific ones more often on what a bakery says about itself.

Where Phoenix bakeries are usually listed (advice): Google Business Profile (it feeds Google Maps), Yelp and Tripadvisor. If you sell through delivery apps such as DoorDash or Uber Eats, those listings carry your name and hours too, and wedding cake bakers are often listed on wedding sites such as The Knot. Local food media such as Phoenix New Times and Eater Phoenix choose their own picks, so you can't list yourself there, but you can check what they say about you.

How customers ask about Phoenix bakeries

Our six questions covered a general recommendation for bread and pastries, custom birthday cakes with allergy-friendly options, price and value, reviews and a long-standing reputation, a bakery open right now for quick pickup, and independent alternatives to Panera Bread. In that last question, ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode named Panera Bread itself first, and Proof Bread appeared in all four answers.

Real customers ask more specific questions. Questions worth testing for your own bakery, written the way people type them:

  • "Where can I get fresh sourdough in Arcadia, Phoenix on a Saturday morning?"
  • "Gluten-free bakery in central Phoenix that can do a birthday cake this week"
  • "Bakery near downtown Phoenix open before 7am"
  • "Where to buy conchas and pan dulce in South Phoenix"
  • "Who makes wedding cakes in Phoenix for about 100 guests?"

Use your own neighborhood, products and order types. A question with no place in it can return bakeries in another city.

The same six-question test was run for neighboring businesses too, for example caterers in Philadelphia and restaurants in Atlanta.

What a bakery can check about how AI assistants name it

Advice: these checks are practical and most can be done in an afternoon. None of them can promise a mention; they make the facts about your bakery easier to find and harder to get wrong.

  1. Put your range on the site as text. Which breads and pastries you bake, on which days, and roughly when popular items sell out. A photo of the chalkboard is nice for people, but a plain text list is easier for anyone to read and quote.
  2. Keep hours identical everywhere. Opening time, closing time, days off and holiday hours should match on your site, Google Business Profile, Yelp and any delivery app. The "open right now" question depends on exactly these facts, and early opening is a reason customers choose a bakery.
  3. Write down what you can do for allergies. Which items are gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free or vegan, and whether they are made in a shared kitchen. Say plainly what you can and cannot promise; in our data, this kind of question was answered largely from bakeries' own sites.
  4. Give custom orders their own page. Birthday and wedding cakes, minimum notice, starting prices, how to order and how pickup or delivery works. A form alone, with no text around it, says little about what you make.
  5. Complete your Google Business Profile. 5 of 6 Google AI Mode answers in this run came as Maps places. Check that your main category is bakery (not only cafe), add current photos of your products, set pickup and delivery options, and reply to recent reviews where it helps.
  6. Check the guides that were cited. Search Eater Phoenix, Phoenix New Times, Visit Phoenix, Axios, restaurantji and Tripadvisor for bakeries in your area. Are you there? Are your address, hours and the things you are known for right?
  7. Use one name. If you are "Smith's Bakery & Cafe" on Google, "Smith's Bakeshop" on Instagram and "Smith Bakery" on Yelp, answers and readers may treat you as three places. Pick one form and use it everywhere.

How to check if ChatGPT names your own bakery

Write five or six questions your customers would ask, with Phoenix or your neighborhood in them, and ask several assistants the same questions. Note who is named and which websites are cited, then repeat in a few weeks, because the answers change. CheckAI checks your own customer questions across the same four assistants and shows the names and the cited websites for each answer; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free.

Questions

Do Google reviews matter for a bakery to be named by ChatGPT?
We can't say what each assistant weighs. What we saw: the 24 bakeries Google AI Mode showed from Google Maps averaged 4.7 stars, all had 4.5 stars or more, and the smallest had 39 reviews. As advice, a complete Google listing with current reviews is worth having for customers anyway.
Does my bakery need to be in Eater or Phoenix New Times?
Not necessarily, but local food media were among the most-cited websites in our Phoenix answers: phoenix.eater.com in 5 of 24 answers and phoenixnewtimes.com in 4. You can't list yourself there, but you can check that what they say about you is correct.
Why did ChatGPT and other assistants name donut and cookie shops for a bakery question?
In the question about a bakery open right now, the answers included donut shops, cookie shops and chains. For broad questions the assistants can stretch the category, so a bakery competes with more than other bakeries.
How can I check whether ChatGPT names my bakery?
Ask the questions your customers would ask, with Phoenix or your neighborhood written in, to several assistants, and repeat them over a few weeks. CheckAI does this with your own questions across four assistants; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free.
