Names as the assistants wrote them, grouped when they meant the same business. One run per question: answers change from run to run, so treat this as a snapshot. We are not affiliated with any business listed and don't rank or endorse them. How we measure
What the answers show about website builders for small businesses
Our data On October 14 we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot six questions a US small business owner might ask when choosing a website builder. All 24 answers came back, and together they named only 19 different tools. 6 of them were named by all four assistants, and 8 appeared only once.
Squarespace was named in all 24 answers, Wix in 21 and Shopify in 19. Hostinger followed in 14 answers, GoDaddy in 13 and WordPress in 8, all of them named by all four assistants. The answers were short: most listed between three and six names, so these six tools filled almost every list. This is one run per question, so read the counts as a snapshot, not a ranking.
After the top six, only Square Online (4 answers), IONOS (3) and a few names with 1 or 2 answers appeared at all.
Which name came first depended on the assistant
The same six tools were named, but not in the same order. In the general question about the most recommended website builder, each assistant started with a different name: ChatGPT with Wix, Google AI Mode with WordPress, Gemini with Squarespace and Copilot with Hostinger. Copilot named Hostinger in all 6 of its answers and put it first twice; Gemini put Hostinger first for value and for reviews. Only the question about a retail business with an online store had one clear first name: all four assistants started with Shopify.
The alternatives question named Wix
Asked about alternatives to Wix, Google AI Mode named Wix itself first, followed by Squarespace and Shopify. ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot started with Squarespace. A few names appeared only in this answer, such as Webflow, SITE123, Webador, Bluehost, SiteGround and Elementor.
Hosts, shop systems and design tools
The answers mixed several kinds of products. Hostinger, GoDaddy, IONOS, Bluehost and SiteGround are hosting companies with site builders; Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce and Square Online are shop systems; Canva and Google Sites each appeared once, in the question about setting up a site today. WordPress was named in 8 answers, once as "WordPress.org", the self-hosted software. For buyers, the category "website builder" is wide, and the answers reflected that.
Which websites the answers cite for website builders
Our data 20 of 24 answers carried source links: all of ChatGPT's and Copilot's, 5 of Google AI Mode's and 3 of Gemini's. The most-cited website was techradar.com, in 11 of 24 answers. reddit.com followed with 7, then website-builders.cybernews.com and fitsmallbusiness.com with 5 each, zapier.com and squarespace.com with 4, youtube.com and creativebloq.com with 3.
The cited sources were mostly review and roundup articles from tech and small-business media, plus community threads. The vendors' own sites were cited less often: squarespace.com most (4 answers, plus its support site in 2), wix.com in 2, and shopify.com, godaddy.com, webflow.com, woocommerce.com and canva.com once each. Review platforms barely appeared: capterra.com and trustpilot.com were each cited once, in ChatGPT's answer about reviews and support.
Where website builders are usually listed and reviewed (advice): software review sites such as G2, Capterra and Trustpilot; "best website builder" roundups in tech and small business publications; independent testing sites that build sample sites with each tool; template and theme marketplaces; and forums where small business owners and freelancers compare tools.

How small business owners ask AI assistants about website builders
Our six questions covered a general recommendation, a retail business with an online store, value for money, reviews and customer support, setting up a site today and alternatives to Wix. Real buyers usually ask with their trade and their needs in the question. Questions worth testing, written the way people type them:
- "Best website builder for a hair salon in Chicago with online booking"
- "Easiest website builder for a restaurant in the US with a menu and online ordering"
- "Website builder with its own domain and email for a plumber in Ohio"
- "Can I move my Wix site to Squarespace without losing my SEO?"
- "Cheapest website builder for a photographer in the US with client galleries"
Test questions that describe the trade and features your product supports.
What a website builder company can check to show up in AI answers
Advice: these checks are concrete and can be done in a few days. None of them can promise a mention; they make it easier for anyone reviewing or answering about your product to describe it correctly.
- Show real prices as text. Monthly and annual prices, the renewal price next to any introductory offer, whether a domain is included and for how long, and transaction fees on store plans. A price that only shows in a toggle or an image is easy to misquote.
- Give each trade a page. Restaurants, salons, photographers, contractors, online stores: one page per trade with the features that trade needs, such as booking, menus, galleries or quote forms.
- Publish honest comparison and migration pages. "Your tool vs Wix", "Squarespace alternatives" and a step-by-step guide for moving a site from another builder, with real differences and a date.
- Make support easy to describe. One question asked about customer support reputation. State your support channels, hours and languages in text, on one page.
- Check the roundups that were cited. Open the TechRadar, Cybernews, Fit Small Business, Zapier and Creative Bloq articles that appear in your own answers. Are you included, and are your plans and prices current?
- Keep review profiles current. On Trustpilot, Capterra and G2, check your category, plan names and recent reviews, and that the product name matches your site.
- Make "live today" visible. One question asked where to set up a site today. How long a first site takes, whether a free plan or trial exists and whether a card is needed should be easy to find in text.
How to check whether ChatGPT names your website builder
Write down the questions your buyers ask, including the trades and features where you are the better fit, and ask several assistants. Note which tools are named, in which order and which websites are cited, and repeat after a few weeks, because answers change. CheckAI checks your own customer questions across the same four assistants and shows the names and cited websites for every answer; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free. Our guide on how to check if ChatGPT names your business walks through the manual version.
