Names as the assistants wrote them, grouped when they meant the same business. One run per question: answers change from run to run, so treat this as a snapshot. We are not affiliated with any business listed and don't rank or endorse them. How we measure

What ChatGPT and other assistants named for Austin beauty salons

Our data On October 14 we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot six questions a client in Austin might ask when looking for a beauty salon or cosmetic studio. All 24 answers came back, and together they named 73 different businesses. 51 of those were named only once. Only 3 were named by all four assistants: Viva Day Spa, Milk + Honey Spa and Fresh Cosmetic Studio.

Viva Day Spa and Milk + Honey Spa were each named in 6 of 24 answers, Golden Hour in 5 (by ChatGPT and Google AI Mode only), and Wild and Beautiful, Fresh Cosmetic Studio and Vixen Esthetics in 4 each. Wild and Beautiful came only from Google AI Mode, where it was named first three times. This is one run per question, so read the counts as a snapshot, not a ranking.

Few places were named consistently. A name that appeared once came from one assistant in one answer.

One question accounted for several mentions

Asked for alternatives to Milk and Honey Spa, ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini named Milk + Honey Spa itself first, and Copilot named it too. Viva Day Spa appeared in all four of those answers. So 4 of the 6 answers for each of these two spas came from that one question. Fresh Cosmetic Studio's 4 answers all came from the question about a studio with same-day appointments, where all four assistants named it.

What counts as a beauty salon

The answers read "beauty salon" and "cosmetic studio" in very different ways. The lists mixed day spas, med spas, esthetician and skin studios, hair salons, a nail lounge, brow and threading studios, makeup boutiques and dermatology practices. For the value question, Gemini named two beauty schools and a barbershop. Asked for high-quality treatments, ChatGPT cited five med spa directory and review sites, and its list included med spas and aesthetic clinics.

For a business, this means the category word alone does not tell an assistant much. A facial studio, a lash bar and a med spa may all answer to "beauty salon", and the answers drifted toward whichever type the wording suggested.

Google AI Mode answered with Google Maps places

Our data All 6 of Google AI Mode's answers came as Google Maps places, 29 in total. They averaged 4.9 stars, and 97% had 4.5 stars or more. The median number of reviews was 319, but the place with the fewest had only 9. That does not show that reviews are the reason a place was shown, only what the places in these answers had in common.

Where the names come from: websites cited for Austin beauty salons

Our data ChatGPT and Copilot attached source links to all 6 of their answers, Google AI Mode to 1 and Gemini to none. No website stood out: medicalspalocator.com, bestprosintown.com, fresha.com and reviews.birdeye.com were cited in 3 of 24 answers each, threebestrated.com, groupon.com and one studio's own site, lovelylillys.com, in 2 each. Google AI Mode's single cited source was a studio's booking page on zenoti.com.

So the sources were a mix of med spa directories, "best of" lists, review pages, booking platforms and deal sites, plus a few studios' own websites. For the same-day appointments question, ChatGPT cited 10 sites, among them magazines, a news site and several clinics' own pages.

Where US beauty salons are usually listed (advice): Google Business Profile (it feeds Google Maps), Yelp, the booking platform you use (Fresha and Vagaro both appeared in these answers' sources; StyleSeat and Booksy are common too), and deal sites such as Groupon if you run offers there. "Best of" lists choose their own picks; check how they select before you pay for a listing.

How clients ask about Austin beauty salons

Our six questions covered quality, sensitive skin and custom facials, value, experienced estheticians and reviews, a same-day appointment, and alternatives to a well-known spa. Clients often ask about one treatment, a skin concern or a time slot. Questions worth testing, written the way people type them:

  • "Brazilian wax in South Austin open on Sunday"
  • "Lash lift near Mueller Austin this week"
  • "Facial for rosacea in Austin, esthetician with experience"
  • "Affordable dermaplaning facial in East Austin"
  • "Bridal makeup and hair trial in Austin for a wedding in May"

Use your own neighborhood and the treatments you actually offer. A question without a place in it can return national chains or online advice instead of local studios.

Other tests in this series cover hair salons in Denver and aesthetic clinics in San Diego.

What a beauty salon can check about how AI assistants name it

Advice: these checks are practical and most can be done in an afternoon. None of them can promise a mention; they make the facts about your salon easy to find and hard to get wrong.

  1. Say what kind of business you are. Skin studio, day spa, nail salon, med spa or full-service salon: put it in one plain sentence near the top of your homepage and in your Google category. The answers mixed these types freely.
  2. Give each treatment its own section. Facials, peels, waxing, lashes, brows, makeup: what it is, who it suits, how long it takes and what it costs. A menu that exists only as an image or inside the booking widget is hard to read for anyone who isn't clicking through.
  3. Name the skin concerns you handle. Sensitive skin, acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation: if you work with them, say so in text, and say when you refer clients to a dermatologist.
  4. Be clear about medical treatments. If you offer injectables, lasers or other medical procedures, say who performs them and with what qualification. If you don't, say that too, so you are not confused with a med spa.
  5. Show how fast clients can book. Same-day or walk-in availability, opening hours and a direct booking link on your site and Google Business Profile. Check that hours match on Yelp and your booking platform.
  6. Keep your booking profiles complete. fresha.com was cited in 3 answers and vagaro.com in 1. If you are on one of them, check your services, prices, photos and address there.
  7. Introduce your team. Estheticians' names, training and years of experience on an "about" or team page. One of our questions asked for the most experienced estheticians.

How to check if ChatGPT names your own salon

Write five or six questions your clients would ask, with Austin or your neighborhood in them, and ask several assistants. Note who is named, what kind of business each name is and which websites are cited, then repeat in a few weeks, because the answers change. CheckAI checks your own customer questions across the same four assistants and shows the names and cited websites for every answer; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free.

Questions

Do Google reviews matter for a beauty salon to be named by ChatGPT?
We can't say what each assistant weighs. What we saw: the 29 places Google AI Mode showed from Google Maps averaged 4.9 stars with a median of 319 reviews, yet one had only 9 reviews. As advice, a complete Google listing with current reviews is useful for clients anyway.
Why does ChatGPT name med spas when I run a skin studio?
The answers read "beauty salon" and "cosmetic studio" broadly. In our Austin run, ChatGPT's answer about high-quality treatments cited med spa directories, and the lists mixed med spas, day spas and esthetician studios. Saying clearly on your site which treatments you do, and which you don't, helps a reader place you.
Do booking sites like Fresha or Vagaro matter for AI mentions?
fresha.com was cited in 3 of 24 answers and vagaro.com in 1, next to Groupon in 2. Those citations do not show that a listing leads to a mention. If you take bookings there, check that your profile and services are current.
How can I check whether ChatGPT names my beauty salon?
Ask the questions your clients would ask, with Austin or your neighborhood written in, to several assistants, and repeat them over a few weeks. CheckAI does this with your own questions across four assistants; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free.
