Names as the assistants wrote them, grouped when they meant the same business. One run per question: answers change from run to run, so treat this as a snapshot. We are not affiliated with any business listed and don't rank or endorse them. How we measure
What ChatGPT and other assistants named for Chicago gyms
Our data On October 14 we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot six questions someone in Chicago might ask when looking for a gym or fitness studio. All 24 answers came back, and together they named 74 different gyms, studios and clubs. 43 of those were named only once, but 6 were named by all four assistants.
Studio Three was named in 10 of 24 answers, 4 of them by Gemini. Mode Gym followed with 9 (4 from Google AI Mode), Midtown Athletic Club with 7 and TRAIN MOMENT with 6. East Bank Club and LA Fitness were named in 5 each, and BIÂN, the sixth name all four assistants used, in 4. This is one run per question, so read the counts as a snapshot, not a ranking.
For Chicago, a small group of names recurred while many others appeared once. Most names were not repeated by another assistant in this snapshot, so one run alone gives limited evidence about a single gym.
The question decided the type of gym
The six questions drew very different kinds of places. For early morning strength classes, ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini all named TRAIN MOMENT first. For the most affordable memberships, ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot named national chains such as Planet Fitness, LA Fitness, Blink Fitness and Snap Fitness, plus the Chicago Park District's fitness centers and the YMCA. Google AI Mode answered the same question with nine names, mostly neighborhood gyms such as Wicker Park Fitness and Logan Square Gym.
For alternatives to Equinox, the answers converged: East Bank Club, Midtown Athletic Club and BIÂN were named by all four assistants, and ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot named Equinox itself first. A gym's chance of being named depended less on gyms in general and more on which kind of question was asked.
Long lists from Copilot
Copilot named the most, 53 names across its 6 answers, against 28 to 41 for the others. Its answer about reviews and experienced trainers alone listed 15 names, from boutique studios and Lagree and cycling studios to LA Fitness. A place in a list of 15 is a mention, but one among many.
Google AI Mode answered with Google Maps places
Our data 4 of Google AI Mode's 6 answers came as Google Maps places, 25 in total. They averaged 4.75 stars, 84% had 4.5 stars or more, the median number of reviews was 152, and the place with the fewest had 44. That does not show that reviews are the reason a gym was shown, only what the gyms in these answers had in common.
Where the names come from: websites cited for Chicago gyms
Our data ChatGPT and Copilot attached source links to all 6 of their answers, Google AI Mode to 4 and Gemini to 1. The most-cited website was classpass.com, in 8 of 24 answers. Then came bestinhood.com, reddit.com and littlechicagoguide.com (4 each) and timeout.com (3). trustanalytica.org, yably.com and planetfitness.com were cited twice each.
So the sources were a class booking platform, local "best of" lists and city guides, Reddit discussions and a few gyms' own sites. For the question about a studio open today, ChatGPT cited 10 sites, most of them news and lifestyle media rather than gyms. For the value question, the chains' own pages were cited.
Where US gyms are usually listed (advice): Google Business Profile (it feeds Google Maps), Yelp, class booking platforms such as ClassPass (cited here) and the scheduling app you use, for example Mindbody, and local "best of" guides, which choose their own picks. Check how a list selects before you pay to be on it.
How members ask about Chicago gyms
Our six questions covered overall quality, early morning strength classes, value, reviews and experienced trainers, a studio open today, and alternatives to Equinox. People usually add a neighborhood, a time or a specific need. Questions worth testing, written the way people type them:
- "24 hour gym in Lincoln Park Chicago"
- "Gym with childcare in Lakeview Chicago"
- "Day pass gym in the Loop, Chicago, for visitors"
- "Powerlifting gym in the West Loop with deadlift platforms"
- "Small group personal training in Logan Square for beginners"
Use your own neighborhood and what you really offer. Also test a version without a place, then compare the names it returns with the local version.

What a gym can check about how AI assistants name it
Advice: these checks are practical and most can be done in an afternoon. None of them can promise a mention; they make the facts about your gym easy to find and hard to get wrong.
- Put membership prices on your site. Monthly price, initiation fee, contract length, cancellation terms and class packs, as text. One of our six questions was about value, and for that question the chains' own pages were cited.
- Publish the class schedule as text. Class names, times and what each class involves, on a page that loads without the booking app. A question about early morning strength classes can only be answered from your site if the early start times and the word "strength" appear somewhere readable.
- Be exact about hours. Staffed hours, key-card or 24-hour access, holiday hours. Keep them the same on your site, Google Business Profile and Yelp; one question asked for a studio open today.
- Offer a clear way to try it. Day pass, drop-in price, free trial class or guest policy, on one page. Visitors and newcomers ask for exactly this.
- List equipment and amenities. Racks and platforms, turf, pool, sauna, showers, lockers, childcare, parking: a plain list helps anyone comparing gyms for one specific need.
- Introduce your coaches. Names, certifications and what each one specializes in. One of our questions asked for the most experienced trainers.
- Check the cited lists and platforms. Open your ClassPass profile and the bestinhood.com, Little Chicago Guide and Time Out pages for your area. Are you there, with the right address and neighborhood?
How to check if ChatGPT names your own gym
Write five or six questions your members would ask, with Chicago or your neighborhood in them, and ask several assistants. Note who is named, what kind of gym each name is and which websites are cited, then repeat in a few weeks, because the answers change. CheckAI checks your own customer questions across the same four assistants and shows the names and cited websites for every answer; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free.
