What ChatGPT and other assistants named for Portland driving schools

Our data On October 14 we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot six questions a student driver or a parent in Portland, Oregon might ask about driving schools. All 24 answers came back, and together they named only 21 different schools. 9 of them were named once, and 3 were named by all four assistants. This is one run per question, so read the counts as a snapshot, not a ranking.

The answers were strongly concentrated. 1st Learn To Drive was named in 22 of 24 answers, including all 6 from ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. Horizon Driver Education was named in 21, including all 6 from ChatGPT and Google AI Mode. Pacific Driver Education followed with 17, including all 6 from Copilot. Every other school was named in 5 answers or fewer: Advantage Driving Academy in 5, Oregon Elite Driving School in 4, then several schools with 2 or 3.

The lists were short. ChatGPT named 22 schools across its 6 answers, Copilot 23, Gemini 25 and Google AI Mode 26. The question about a school for new drivers produced only 5 different names in total. Three schools appeared in nearly every answer, and the remaining places in each list were few.

The alternatives question returned the same names

One question asked for "good alternatives to the big driving school chains". The answers did not change much. All four assistants named 1st Learn To Drive again, three named Horizon Driver Education and three named Pacific Driver Education. Some smaller schools appeared next to them, such as Advantage Driving Academy, Oregon Elite Driving School, Tom's Driving Academy and Bridge City Driving School. A question meant to find alternatives returned mostly the same names as the general questions.

Colleges, a racing school and name variants

Not all names were driving schools in the usual sense. Two community colleges with driver education came up: Portland Community College (named once under its full name and twice as PCC Driver Education) and Chemeketa Community College. Pro Drive Racing School was named for the questions about affordable packages and trusted instructors. Advantage Driving Academy also appeared once as Advantage Driving School; the list above counts these variants separately.

Google AI Mode answered with Google Maps places

Our data All 6 of Google AI Mode's answers came as Google Maps places: 23 schools in total. Their average rating was 4.66 stars, and 70% had 4.5 stars or more. The median school had 76 reviews; the smallest had 6.

That does not show why a school was included. It shows that driving schools with fairly few reviews appeared in these answers, and that almost a third of the places were rated below 4.5 stars.

Where the names come from: websites cited for Portland driving schools

Our data ChatGPT and Copilot attached source links to all 6 of their answers, Google AI Mode to 3 and Gemini to none. The most-cited website was 1stlearntodrive.com (9 of 24 answers), followed by pacificdrivereducation.com (7), threebestrated.com (6), oregon.gov and horizondrivereducation.com (5 each) and driversedrankings.com (4). Several sites were cited twice, including theripcityreview.com, drivingschools.directory and tomsdriving.com.

So the own websites of the three most-named schools were also among the most-cited sources. Our data does not show which came first, but it does show that their own pages were part of what the answers linked to. The state's pages at oregon.gov were cited in 5 answers, all of them from ChatGPT.

Where US driving schools are usually listed (advice): Google Business Profile (it feeds Google Maps), Yelp, Thumbtack (cited once in our data), the Better Business Bureau and the state's list of approved driver education providers. "Best driving schools in Portland" lists such as threebestrated.com choose on their own, so you can't simply add yourself, but you can check what they say about you.

How students and parents ask about Portland driving schools

Our six questions covered new drivers, adult refresher lessons, affordable packages, trusted instructors, immediate availability and alternatives to the big chains. Real questions often name the learner, the goal and the area. Questions worth testing for your own school:

Use the neighborhoods and suburbs where you pick students up. A question without a place in it can return schools in another state.

What a driving school can check about how AI assistants name it

Advice: these checks are concrete and most take an hour or less. None of them can promise a mention; they make the facts about your school easy to find and hard to get wrong.

1. Give each program its own page. Teen driver education, adult beginners, adult refresher lessons, nervous drivers, road test preparation. One of our questions asked about adult refresher lessons; a page that says you offer them answers it directly.
2. State your approval in text. If your teen course is approved by the state, say so in a sentence on your site, with what it means for the student, and check that you appear correctly on the state's list.
3. Publish your packages and prices. What a package includes (classroom hours, drive time, observation), what it costs and whether you offer payment plans. One question asked for the most affordable packages.
4. Be honest about availability. How far ahead lessons are booked, whether you have evening or weekend slots, and how quickly a new student can start. One question asked for immediate availability.
5. List your pickup area. Name the neighborhoods and suburbs where instructors pick students up, as text on your site, not only as a map image.
6. Introduce your instructors. Names, experience and languages spoken. Trust in the instructor is what one of our questions asked about.
7. Check the sites that were cited. Open threebestrated.com, driversedrankings.com and the review pages that list Portland schools. Are you there, with the right name, phone number and service area?
