Names as the assistants wrote them, grouped when they meant the same business. One run per question: answers change from run to run, so treat this as a snapshot. We are not affiliated with any business listed and don't rank or endorse them. How we measure

What the answers show about used car dealers in San Diego

Our data On October 14 we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot six questions a San Diego buyer might ask about used car dealers. All 24 answers came back, and together they named 81 different dealers, chains and services. 48 of them were named only once, and only 3 were named by all four assistants. This is one run per question, so read the counts as a snapshot, not a ranking.

Auto City was named most often, in 10 of 24 answers, by all four assistants. San Diego Auto Finder and DriveTime followed with 7 answers each, and National City Auto Center with 6; DriveTime and National City Auto Center were the other two names that all four assistants gave. Mossy Toyota was named in 6 answers, but only by ChatGPT and Copilot. CarNova was named in 4 answers, all from Google AI Mode.

The lists were long, especially from Copilot. ChatGPT named 27 dealers across its 6 answers, Google AI Mode 37, Gemini 44 and Copilot 52. More than half of all names came up only once, and the names varied between assistants and questions in this run.

Many kinds of sellers in one list

The answers mixed very different businesses. Independent lots stood next to franchise new-car dealers with used inventory, such as Mossy Toyota, Kearny Mesa Hyundai or BMW of Carlsbad, and next to national chains such as CarMax, Carvana and DriveTime. Gemini also named two credit unions, the vehicle history services CARFAX and AutoCheck, and the marketplaces AutoTrader and CarGurus. Copilot listed the review sites TrustAnalytica and CarEdge as if they were dealers.

The CarMax question

Asked for "the best alternatives to CarMax", Google AI Mode, Gemini and Copilot all named CarMax first. ChatGPT left CarMax out and started with Carvana. This question produced the longest lists, with 32 different names. Google AI Mode and Gemini listed several individual AutoNation stores under separate names, and Google AI Mode even included a rental car counter at the airport. Name variants like these are counted separately in the list above.

Bad credit financing: dealers' own pages

The question about dealers that specialize in bad credit financing had the most specific sources. ChatGPT cited ten websites, nearly all of them dealers' own sites, and no directory or review site. Copilot cited three dealer websites as well. Karz Plus was named for this question by Google AI Mode, Gemini and Copilot.

Google AI Mode answered with Google Maps places

Our data All 6 of Google AI Mode's answers came as Google Maps places: 30 dealers in total. Their average rating was 4.68 stars, and 80% had 4.5 stars or more. The median dealer had 208 reviews; the smallest had 13.

That does not show why a dealer was included. It records that 80% had 4.5 stars or more and that review counts ranged from 13 to a median of 208.

Which websites the answers cite for used car dealers

Our data ChatGPT attached source links to all 6 of its answers, Copilot to 5, Gemini to 1 and Google AI Mode to none. The most-cited websites were caredge.com and trustanalytica.org (7 of 24 answers each), threebestrated.com (6), then reviews.birdeye.com, yably.com and prepurchaseauto.com (3 each). carfax.com and dealerrater.com were cited in 2 answers each.

For the question about a dealer open today, ChatGPT cited general car-buying and personal finance articles, from sites such as kbb.com, edmunds.com and jdpower.com, and no dealer's website. For the bad credit question, as noted, it cited only dealers.

Where US used car dealers are usually listed (advice): Google Business Profile (it feeds Google Maps), DealerRater (in our sources), Cars.com, CarGurus, Autotrader, Yelp and the Better Business Bureau. Marketplaces show your inventory and often your reviews. "Best dealers in San Diego" lists choose on their own, so you can't simply add yourself, but you can check what they say about you.

How buyers ask AI assistants about used cars in San Diego

Our six questions covered a reliable vehicle, bad credit financing, the cheapest prices, trusted reviews, a dealer open today and alternatives to CarMax. Buyers often name a budget, a type of car, their credit situation and the area. Questions worth testing for your own dealership:

  • "Used truck dealer in El Cajon with financing for first-time buyers"
  • "Used car dealer in Chula Vista that gives a fair trade-in value"
  • "Where can I buy a used hybrid in Oceanside with a warranty?"
  • "Used car dealer in Kearny Mesa that allows an independent inspection"
  • "Is there a used car lot open on Sunday in National City?"

Use the areas you serve and the cars you sell most. A question without a place in it can return dealers in another state.

What a used car dealer can check to show up in AI answers

Advice: these checks are concrete and most take an hour or two. None of them can promise a mention; they make the facts about your dealership easy to find and hard to get wrong.

  1. Write a plain financing page. Say which situations you finance (bad credit, no credit, first-time buyers), whether you work with outside lenders or finance in house, and what a buyer needs to bring. In this run, dealers' financing pages were cited for the bad credit question.
  2. Make your inventory readable as text. Each car with make, model, year, mileage and price on its own page, not only as photos or inside a widget that loads late. Buyers ask about specific cars and budgets.
  3. Explain your pricing. Whether prices are fixed or negotiable, which fees are added and what a quoted price includes. One question asked for the cheapest prices and best value.
  4. Describe inspections, warranties and returns. Whether cars are inspected before sale, whether you allow an independent pre-purchase inspection, what warranty or return policy applies. These are the facts behind "trusted" and "reliable".
  5. Keep hours exact. One question asked for a dealer open today. Put your real hours, including weekends and holidays, on your site and your Google Business Profile, and keep them identical.
  6. Show your dealer license. Put your California dealer license number, your address and how long you have been in business on the site as text.
  7. Check the review sites that were cited. Open caredge.com, threebestrated.com and dealerrater.com for San Diego. Are you listed, with the right name, address and phone number?

How to check whether ChatGPT names your dealership

Write five or six questions your buyers would ask, with San Diego or your area in them and the cars and financing you offer, and ask several assistants the same questions. Note who is named and which websites are cited, then repeat in a few weeks, because the answers change. CheckAI checks your own customer questions across the same four assistants and shows the names and the cited websites for each answer; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free. Our guide on how to check if ChatGPT names your business walks through the manual version.

Questions

Which used car dealers does ChatGPT recommend in San Diego?
In our October 14 run, the four assistants gave 81 different names in 24 answers, 48 of them only once. Auto City was named most often, in 10 of 24 answers. One run per question, so a snapshot, not a ranking.
Do reviews matter for ChatGPT naming a used car dealer in San Diego?
We can't say how each assistant weighs them. What we saw: the 30 dealers Google AI Mode showed from Google Maps averaged 4.68 stars, and 80% had 4.5 or more; review counts ranged from 13 to a median of 208. As advice, a complete Google listing with current reviews is worth keeping anyway.
Does my dealership need to be on DealerRater or CarEdge?
Not necessarily. In our San Diego answers caredge.com and trustanalytica.org were each cited in 7 of 24 answers, threebestrated.com in 6 and dealerrater.com in 2. Check whether you appear there and whether your name, address and hours are correct.
Do national chains like CarMax and Carvana take over the answers?
Not in this run: CarMax was named in 5 of 24 answers and Carvana in 3, among 81 different names in total. The field was scattered, so a single mention says little either way; repeat your own check over a few weeks.
How can I check whether ChatGPT names my dealership?
Ask the questions your buyers ask, with San Diego or your neighborhood written in, to several assistants, and repeat them over a few weeks. CheckAI does this with your own questions across four assistants; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free.
