What ChatGPT and other assistants named for Boston car repair shops

Our data On October 14 we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot six questions a Boston driver might ask about car repair shops. All 24 answers came back, and together they named 55 different shops and services. 32 of them were named only once, and only 4 were named by all four assistants. This is one run per question, so read the counts as a snapshot, not a ranking.

E&S Automotive, Central Automotive, Fran's Auto Repair and Ell-Bern Automotive were each named in 9 of 24 answers. Only E&S Automotive was named by all four assistants, and 5 of its 9 answers came from Copilot. Fran's Auto Repair was named in 5 of Google AI Mode's 6 answers. Mike's Auto Repair was named in 7 answers from three assistants.

Several shops came from one assistant only: Boston Motor Werks was named in 4 answers, all from Google AI Mode, and J & P Garage in 3, all from ChatGPT. For a repair shop, this means the answer depends a lot on which assistant a driver happens to use. Being named by one is no sign of being named by the others.

A specific question, more agreement

The question about shops that specialize in foreign luxury cars gave the clearest result. All four assistants named Gerardo's Foreign Car Services, three named Foreign Auto Center and three named German Performance Service. ChatGPT cited ten websites for this question, most of them the sites of European car specialists in and around Boston. For general maintenance, reviews and urgent service, the answers overlapped much less.

Chains, apps and an empty answer

Asked for "the top rated alternatives to Pep Boys", all four assistants named Pep Boys first. Gemini then added other national chains such as Meineke, Monro, Jiffy Lube and Valvoline Instant Oil Change, plus the mobile repair services YourMechanic and Wrench. Copilot listed the review sites TrustAnalytica and ThreeBestRated as if they were shops, and Google AI Mode named an app in its answer to the price question.

One answer named no shop at all: for the question about affordable shops with fair prices, ChatGPT cited five websites, including carfax.com and checkbook.org, but gave no shop names. A question about price can end in advice on how to compare rather than in a list.

Google AI Mode answered with Google Maps places

Our data 5 of Google AI Mode's 6 answers came as Google Maps places: 24 shops in total. Their average rating was 4.7 stars, and 83% had 4.5 stars or more. The median shop had 208 reviews; the smallest had 13.

That does not show why a shop was included. It shows that most shops in these answers were well rated, while their review counts ranged widely, and that a few shops below 4.5 stars appeared too.

Where the names come from: websites cited for Boston car repair shops

Our data ChatGPT and Copilot attached source links to all 6 of their answers, Google AI Mode to 2 and Gemini to 1. The most-cited website was threebestrated.com (6 of 24 answers), followed by carfax.com, reviews.birdeye.com, checkbook.org and loc8nearme.com (5 each) and trustanalytica.org (4). aaa.com and chamberofcommerce.com were cited in 2 answers each.

Shops' own websites were cited mostly for specific needs: European car specialists for the luxury question, and shops such as instantcarfix.com and kerysautoservice.com for urgent service. For the general questions, the sources were almost all review and listing sites.

Where US repair shops are usually listed (advice): Google Business Profile (it feeds Google Maps), Yelp, CARFAX (which shows service shops), the Better Business Bureau and RepairPal. Programs such as AAA Approved Auto Repair and ASE certification for technicians are worth stating where they apply. "Best shops in Boston" lists choose on their own, so you can't simply add yourself, but you can check what they say about you.

How drivers ask about Boston car repair shops

Our six questions covered general maintenance, foreign luxury cars, fair prices, trustworthy mechanics, urgent service today and alternatives to a national chain. Drivers usually name the car, the symptom and the place. Questions worth testing for your own shop:

• "Honest brake job quote in Somerville"
• "Hybrid repair shop in Cambridge for an older Prius"
• "Where can I get a state inspection in Dorchester this week?"
• "Mechanic near Back Bay who does pre-purchase inspections on used cars"

Use the neighborhoods you serve and the makes and jobs you want more of. A question without a place in it can return shops in another city.

The same six-question test was run for neighboring businesses too, for example bike shops in Chicago and used car dealers in San Diego.

What a repair shop can check about how AI assistants name it

Advice: these checks are concrete and most take an hour or less. None of them can promise a mention; they make the facts about your shop easy to find and hard to get wrong.

1. Name the makes you specialize in. If you are known for European cars, Japanese imports, hybrids or diesel trucks, give it its own page. In this run, the specialty question was where the assistants agreed most.
2. List your services one by one. Brakes, diagnostics, timing belts, transmissions, state inspections, pre-purchase inspections: one plain line or page per job, so a specific question can be matched to your shop.
3. Be clear about price. State your diagnostic fee, whether estimates are free, whether you give written estimates before work, and your warranty on parts and labor. One question asked for fair prices.
4. Say when you can take a car. Hours, walk-ins or appointments only, same-day diagnostics, and whether you work with a towing service. One question asked for urgent service today.
5. Show certifications as text. ASE certifications, AAA approval or manufacturer training, written out on your site and not only as badge images.
6. Complete your Google Business Profile. 5 of 6 Google AI Mode answers were Maps places. Check the category, hours, services and photos of your real bays, and keep the name identical to your site, CARFAX and Yelp.
7. Check the sites that were cited. Open threebestrated.com, checkbook.org, carfax.com and the Birdeye review pages for Boston. Is your shop there, with the right name, address and phone number?
