Names as the assistants wrote them, grouped when they meant the same business. One run per question: answers change from run to run, so treat this as a snapshot. We are not affiliated with any business listed and don't rank or endorse them. How we measure

What ChatGPT and other assistants named for Chicago bike shops

Our data On October 14 we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot six questions a customer in Chicago might ask when looking for a bike shop. All 24 answers came back, and together they named 62 different shops, brands and services. 28 of those were named only once, while 8 shops were named by all four assistants.

Comrade Cycles was named in 15 of 24 answers, by all four assistants. Village Cycle Center was named in 11 and Kozy's Cyclery in 8; Kozy's average position was 2.8. Working Bikes, Nearly New Bicycles and BFF Bikes appeared in 6 answers each. This is one run per question, so read the counts as a snapshot, not a ranking.

For a bike shop, the more useful finding is how much the names depended on the question. Apart from Comrade Cycles and Village Cycle Center, most shops showed up for one or two of the six questions and were missing from the rest. Copilot gave the longest lists, 49 names across its 6 answers, against 30 for ChatGPT.

Each question had its own shops

The question about affordable, tuned used bikes was answered with nonprofit and community shops: Working Bikes, Nearly New Bicycles and The Recyclery Collective were named by all four assistants there, and Ciclo Urbano / West Town Bikes by three. The question about custom commuter setups and cargo bikes named Offbeat Bikes in all four answers, and J.C. Lind Bike Co. and Comrade Cycles in three. For a flat tire near downtown today, Kozy's Cyclery was in all four answers, and Golas and Sons Bicycle Repair in two.

The results differed between questions about used bikes, cargo bikes, quick repairs and general bike shops.

Brands next to shops

Many names were bike and parts brands, not shops. Copilot's cargo answer listed Urban Arrow, Tern, Brompton, Gazelle, Riese & Müller, Surly and others next to three shops. Gemini's answer about alternatives for a road bike named 20 names, many of them brands such as Cannondale, Giant, Pinarello and Cervélo. Lock and tire brands (Kryptonite, Abus, Schwalbe) appeared too, and REI was named for the quick repair question by Gemini and Copilot.

The alternatives question named Village Cycle Center

Asked for alternatives to Village Cycle Center for a road bike, all four assistants named Village Cycle Center itself, and three of them named it first. Comrade Cycles appeared in all four of those answers, Specialized Chicago, Turin Bicycle and BFF Bikes in three.

Google AI Mode answered with Google Maps places

Our data All 6 of Google AI Mode's answers came as Google Maps places, 32 in total. They averaged 4.8 stars, 91 percent had 4.5 stars or more, the median number of reviews was 300, and the shop with the fewest had 72. That does not show that reviews are the reason a shop was shown, only what the shops in these answers had in common.

Where the names come from: websites cited for Chicago bike shops

Our data ChatGPT and Copilot attached source links to all 6 of their answers; Google AI Mode and Gemini to none. The most-cited website was bestinhood.com, a local "best of" list (6 of 24 answers), followed by timeout.com, kozy.com and comradecycles.com (3 each). Checkbook, chicagobikeshops.com, chicago.bike and several shops' own sites, such as offbeatbikes.com, 3rdcoastcycles.com and the Working Bikes online store, were cited twice each.

The sources mixed city guides and "best of" lists with the shops' own websites. For the flat tire question, ChatGPT cited the sites of several shops, and Copilot cited kozy.com and 3rdcoastcycles.com. For the ratings question, ChatGPT cited review and directory sites such as Yellow Pages, Nextdoor and Birdeye reviews.

Where US bike shops are usually listed (advice): Google Business Profile (it feeds Google Maps), Yelp, and the dealer locators of the bike brands you sell. Local "best of" lists and city guides such as Time Out choose their own picks, so you can't list yourself there, but you can check that what they say about you is correct.

How customers ask about Chicago bike shops

Our six questions covered buying a reliable city bike, cargo and custom commuter bikes, affordable used bikes, ratings and experienced mechanics, a quick flat repair today, and alternatives to a known shop for a road bike. Customers often add a bike type, a brand or a neighborhood. Questions worth testing, written the way people type them:

  • "E-bike repair shop in Logan Square Chicago"
  • "Where can I test ride a cargo bike in Chicago this weekend?"
  • "Bike tune-up price near Wicker Park, Chicago"
  • "Bike fitting for road cycling in Chicago"
  • "Kids bike shop on the North Side of Chicago"

Use your own neighborhood, the brands you sell and the services you offer. A question without a place in it can return online sellers and brands instead of shops.

What a bike shop can check about how AI assistants name it

Advice: these checks are practical and most can be done in an afternoon. None of them can promise a mention; they make the facts about your shop easy to find and hard to get wrong.

  1. List the brands and bike types you sell, as text. Cargo bikes, e-bikes, commuter, road, kids' bikes, with the brand names. The cargo and road bike answers listed brands next to shops; a logo row in images does not say the same thing.
  2. Publish a service menu with prices. Flat repair, basic and full tune-up, e-bike service, typical turnaround, and whether you take walk-ins or need an appointment. A customer asking for a quick fix today needs exactly that.
  3. Keep hours and "open today" right everywhere. Your site, Google Business Profile and Yelp should show the same hours, including winter and holiday hours. For the flat tire question, shops' own sites were cited.
  4. Explain your used bikes. If you sell refurbished bikes, say what your tune-up covers, the price range and any warranty. The used bike question was answered with shops that make this their focus.
  5. Give your specialty its own page. Cargo bike test rides, bike fitting, wheel building, vintage restoration: one page each, in plain words, with Chicago and your neighborhood named.
  6. Check the brand dealer locators. If you are an authorized dealer, check that each brand's store locator shows your shop with the right address and services.
  7. Check the lists that were cited. Open bestinhood.com, Time Out's Chicago bike shop pages, chicagobikeshops.com and Checkbook. Are you listed, with the right address, hours and neighborhood?

How to check if ChatGPT names your own shop

Write five or six questions your customers would ask, with Chicago or your neighborhood in them, and ask several assistants. Note who is named, which brands appear and which websites are cited, then repeat in a few weeks, because the answers change. CheckAI checks your own customer questions across the same four assistants and shows the names and cited websites for every answer; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free.

Questions

Do Google reviews matter for a bike shop to be named by ChatGPT?
We can't say what each assistant weighs. What we saw: the 32 shops Google AI Mode showed from Google Maps averaged 4.8 stars, with a median of 300 reviews and at least 72 each. As advice, an accurate Google listing with recent reviews helps customers anyway.
Why do AI assistants list bike brands instead of bike shops?
In our Chicago answers, the cargo bike and road bike questions brought up many brands, such as Tern, Brompton, Surly, Urban Arrow, Specialized and Trek, next to the shops. If you sell or service those brands, saying so in text on your site links your shop to those names.
Can a bike shop be named for one specialty only?
Yes, in this run specific questions brought up their own shops: the used bike question named nonprofit and community shops such as Working Bikes and The Recyclery Collective by all four assistants, and the cargo question named Offbeat Bikes by all four.
How can I check whether ChatGPT names my bike shop?
Ask the questions your customers would ask, with Chicago or your neighborhood written in, to several assistants, and repeat them over a few weeks. CheckAI does this with your own questions across four assistants; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free.
