Which lawyers and law firms in Boston do ChatGPT and other AI assistants name?
It depended on the legal problem: asked about lawyers and law firms in Boston, ChatGPT and the other assistants named 75 different firms and services in 24 answers, 40 of them only once, and each question drew a different kind of firm. Asked for affordable or urgent help, several assistants named bar association referral services instead of firms.
In short
- 75 different names in 24 answers; 40 came up only once, while 8 were named by all four assistants.
- Each question drew its own group: large firms for complex matters, employee-side firms for discrimination cases, injury firms for alternatives to Morgan & Morgan.
- For affordable help and an urgent hearing, answers named the Massachusetts and Boston bar associations' lawyer referral services and legal aid; bostonbar.org was cited in 4 answers.
- For the employment question, the sources were almost all law firms' own websites.

Names as the assistants wrote them, grouped when they meant the same business. One run per question: answers change from run to run, so treat this as a snapshot. We are not affiliated with any business listed and don't rank or endorse them. How we measure
What the answers show about lawyers in Boston
Our data On October 14 we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot six questions a client in Boston might ask when looking for a law firm. All 24 answers came back, and together they named 75 different firms, lawyer referral services and legal aid organizations. 40 of those were named only once, and 8 were named by all four assistants.
No firm stood out across the board. Ropes & Gray, Lubin & Meyer, WilmerHale and Goodwin were each named in 6 of 24 answers, by all four assistants, and Jeffrey Glassman Injury Lawyers in 6 by three. Morgan & Morgan followed with 5. This is one run per question, so read the counts as a snapshot, not a ranking.
Each question returned a different mix of firms, and the overlap between questions was small. The practice area was stated in the questions as well as the city.
Each legal problem, its own group of firms
For complex legal matters, ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini named the same large firms first: Ropes & Gray, WilmerHale, Goodwin and Choate, Hall & Stewart. Copilot answered the same question with seven other firms, none of them in the other three lists. For workplace discrimination, the answers agreed much more: Gordon Law Group was named by all four, and Zalkind Duncan & Bernstein, Conforto Law Group and MacLellan Law Firm by three each. For alternatives to Morgan & Morgan, all four assistants named Morgan & Morgan first, then personal injury firms; Sweeney Merrigan Law appeared in all four of those answers.
The question about client reviews and the highest win rate drew a mix of large firms and personal injury firms. Note that the answers named firms in response to that wording; that is not a statement about any firm's results.
Referral services instead of firms
Asked where to find an affordable firm with reasonable hourly rates, ChatGPT and Gemini named no private firms at all. They named the Boston Bar Association and Massachusetts Bar Association lawyer referral services, Greater Boston Legal Services and legal aid programs instead. Google AI Mode, by contrast, listed six small law offices. Asked how to hire a firm quickly for an urgent hearing today, ChatGPT named only the Massachusetts Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service, and Google AI Mode and Copilot named it first.
The answers for cost and urgency questions included referral services as well as firms.
Few Google Maps places
Our data Only 2 of Google AI Mode's 6 answers came as Google Maps places, 8 firms in total. All 8 had 4.5 stars or more, the average was 4.95, the median number of reviews was 246, and the fewest was 38. With so few places, this says little beyond what those 8 firms had in common.
Which websites the answers cite for law firms
Our data ChatGPT and Copilot attached source links to all 6 of their answers, Google AI Mode to 5 and Gemini to none. The most-cited websites were bostonbar.org and masslawhelp.com (4 of 24 answers each), followed by bestlawfirms.com and vault.com (3 each) and three firms' own sites, maclellanlawfirm.com, gordonllp.com and lubinandmeyer.com (3 each). mass.gov and martindale.com were cited twice each, and avvo.com, justia.com and Super Lawyers once each.
The sources depended on the question. For workplace discrimination, ChatGPT cited 10 websites and Google AI Mode 7, almost all of them law firms' own sites. For the complex matters question, they were mostly firm rankings, legal recruiting and industry sites. For the urgent hearing, ChatGPT cited news sites and public pages, not firms.
Where US law firms are usually listed (advice): Google Business Profile (it feeds Google Maps), lawyer directories such as Avvo, Justia and Martindale-Hubbell (all three were cited at least once here), and the lawyer referral services of your bar associations, which set their own conditions for joining. Rankings such as Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers or Chambers select firms themselves; you can check what they say about you, but you can't simply list yourself.

How clients ask AI assistants about lawyers in Boston
Our six questions covered complex matters, employee-side discrimination cases, affordable rates, reviews and results, an urgent hearing today, and alternatives to Morgan & Morgan. Real clients usually describe their problem rather than a practice area. Questions worth testing, written the way people type them:
- "Employment lawyer in Boston to review my severance agreement"
- "Tenant lawyer in Dorchester, I got an eviction notice"
- "Flat fee estate planning attorney in Newton MA"
- "Boston immigration lawyer who speaks Portuguese"
- "Car accident lawyer in Quincy with a free consultation"
Use the problems your clients actually bring, your neighborhood or town, and the languages you work in. A question without a place in it can return national firms.
What a law firm can check to show up in AI answers
Advice: these checks are about how clearly your firm is described, not legal advice, and none of them can promise a mention. Before you change anything on your site, keep the advertising rules that apply to you in mind.
- Give each practice area its own page. Who you represent (employees or employers, plaintiffs or defendants), typical matters, and the courts or agencies you appear before. For the employment question, firms' own pages were nearly all of the sources.
- Explain fees and the first consultation. Whether you bill hourly, by flat fee or on contingency, and whether a first call is free. For the affordable question, two assistants pointed away from private firms entirely.
- Say how urgent matters are handled. If you take same-day calls for hearings, arrests or restraining orders, state how to reach you and when. If you don't, say so.
- Write full attorney bios. Bar admissions, years in practice, languages spoken and the kinds of matters each attorney handles, on the firm's site and on your directory profiles.
- Keep directory profiles consistent. Google Business Profile, Avvo, Justia, Martindale: the same firm name, address, phone and practice areas everywhere.
- Check your referral service listing. If you take cases through the Boston or Massachusetts bar referral services, check which panels you are on. These services were named for cost and urgency questions.
- Check the rules before you publish claims. Case results, client reviews, ratings, "win rates" and words like "specialist" or "expert" are all areas the rules of professional conduct address. Check what your state's rules allow, or ask your bar's ethics resources, before using them.
How to check whether ChatGPT names your law firm
Write five or six questions your clients would ask, with Boston or your town and the legal problem in them, and ask several assistants. Note who is named, whether firms or referral services come up and which websites are cited, then repeat in a few weeks, because the answers change. CheckAI checks your own customer questions across the same four assistants and shows the names and cited websites for every answer; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free. Our guide on how to check if ChatGPT names your business walks through the manual version.
