Names as the assistants wrote them, grouped when they meant the same business. One run per question: answers change from run to run, so treat this as a snapshot. We are not affiliated with any business listed and don't rank or endorse them. How we measure
What ChatGPT and other assistants named for San Diego accounting firms
Our data On October 14 we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot six questions a small business owner in San Diego might ask when looking for an accounting and tax firm. All 24 answers came back. Together they named 65 different firms, and 41 of them appeared only once. Only three names came from all four assistants. It was one run per question, so read the counts as a snapshot, not a ranking.
Abbo Tax CPA and Profitwise Accounting were each named in 11 of 24 answers, by all four assistants. M.W. Orlando CPA and Dark Horse CPAs followed with 7 each, by three assistants. Love's Accounting, George Dimov, CPA, Morey CPA & Associates and Paul Anderson - CPA were named in 6 each. Below that, the list thinned out quickly: most firms showed up in a single answer from a single assistant.
No firm appeared in more than 11 of the 24 answers. Even the two most-named firms were missing from more than half of them.
The assistants disagreed more than they agreed
Each question produced between 14 and 26 different names across the four assistants, and in two of the six questions no firm was named by more than two of them. Copilot named the most firms (47 across its 6 answers), Gemini 32 and ChatGPT 31. Some names came almost entirely from one assistant: Gemini named Considine & Considine in 4 of its answers, and no other assistant named that firm. George Dimov, CPA came only from Copilot (4 answers) and ChatGPT (2).
So a check with one assistant tells you little about the others. A firm can be a regular in Copilot's lists and absent from Gemini's.
The H&R Block question named H&R Block
We asked which San Diego firms are alternatives to H&R Block for small businesses. All four assistants named H&R Block first; it was named in no other question. Google AI Mode also listed Block Advisors second. Local firms followed, with Abbo Tax CPA and M.W. Orlando CPA among them. In this one question, the named company appeared first in every answer.
Software and online services next to local firms
Asked where to find an affordable firm, Gemini named three local firms and then online services and software: Bench, Pilot, QuickBooks Live, QuickBooks Online, Xero and Wave, plus the CalCPA directory. In other answers, Copilot named national online providers such as 1-800Accountant and indinero next to local practices. For a price question, a local firm competes with do-it-yourself and online options, not only with the office down the street.
Google Maps: high stars, many reviews
Our data Google AI Mode answered all six questions with Google Maps places, 27 firms in total. They averaged 4.93 stars, and every one of them had 4.5 stars or more. The median place had 87 reviews; the one with the fewest had 8. Google AI Mode named Abbo Tax CPA, Love's Accounting and Paul Anderson - CPA in 4 of its 6 answers each.
That does not explain why a firm appeared. It records the Google Maps figures for the places in this snapshot.
Where the names come from: websites cited for San Diego accounting firms
Our data Sourcing differed a lot by assistant. ChatGPT and Copilot added links to all 6 of their answers, Google AI Mode to 2 and Gemini to none. The most-cited website was expertise.com (7 of 24 answers), a site that publishes local lists of service providers, followed by clutch.co (5), a directory of service firms with client reviews. wsj.com appeared in 4 answers, all from ChatGPT. Rating and review sites came next: reviews.birdeye.com (3), clearlyrated.com (2) and threebestrated.com (1).
Firm websites were cited too: sdbookkeepingsolutions.com in 3 answers, vandraccounting.com and schwartzschwartz.com in 2 each. When ChatGPT answered the question about freelance tax preparation, all ten of its links went to the websites of tax and accounting practices. In that answer, the firms' own pages were the source.
Where accounting firms are usually listed and reviewed (advice): the Google Business Profile (it feeds Google Maps), Yelp and the Better Business Bureau, Expertise.com and Clutch, the CalCPA directory of CPAs, the IRS directory of tax return preparers with credentials, and the advisor directories of the accounting software you work with, such as the QuickBooks ProAdvisor and Xero advisor directories.
How small business owners ask about San Diego accounting firms
Our six questions covered a general recommendation, a specialty (tax preparation for freelancers), price, client reviews, availability today and alternatives to H&R Block. Owners usually add their business type and their problem. Questions worth testing for your own firm, written the way people type them:
- "CPA in San Diego for an S corp election and payroll for a small company"
- "Accountant in Chula Vista who does monthly bookkeeping and quarterly estimated taxes for a contractor"
- "Tax preparer in North Park for rideshare and delivery drivers"
- "Who can help with California sales tax for my online store in San Diego?"
- "Accountant in La Jolla who works with QuickBooks and can clean up last year's books"
Use the neighborhoods and nearby cities you actually serve, and the work you want more of. A question without a place can return national online services instead of local firms.
The same six-question test was run for neighboring businesses too, for example accounting software for US small businesses and financial advisors in Phoenix.
What an accounting firm can check about how AI assistants name it
Advice: these checks are concrete and most take an hour or two. None of them can promise a mention; they make the facts about your firm easy to find and hard to misread.
- One page per service. Bookkeeping, payroll, business tax returns, taxes for freelancers and the self-employed, entity setup, IRS notices: one clear page each, saying who it is for. In the freelance question, ChatGPT linked only to firm websites.
- State credentials in text. CPA, enrolled agent, who in the firm holds which, and the exact name the firm is licensed under. Clients can look up a CPA license with the California Board of Accountancy, so the names on your site should match the license.
- Say who you serve and where. Name the industries (restaurants, contractors, online sellers, medical practices) and the areas, for example Mission Valley, Chula Vista or Escondido, as text on the site, not only on a map.
- Give a sense of price. One question asked for an affordable firm, and the answers included online services and software. A starting price for a monthly bookkeeping package or a business return, or a plain explanation of how you quote, helps an owner compare.
- Make availability visible. One question asked for a firm available today. Office hours, whether you take new clients during tax season and how quickly you reply to a first request belong on the site and in the Google Business Profile.
- Keep the Google Business Profile complete. Google AI Mode answered every question with Maps places. Check category, hours, services and photos, and ask satisfied clients for a review after a finished engagement.
- Check the sites that were cited. Look up your firm on Expertise.com, Clutch, ClearlyRated and Birdeye. Are you there, and are name, address and services current?
How to check if ChatGPT names your own firm
Write down five or six questions your clients would ask, with San Diego or your neighborhood and the services you offer most, and put them to several assistants. Note who is named and which websites are cited, then repeat after a few weeks, because answers change. CheckAI checks your own customer questions across the same four assistants and shows the names and cited websites for every answer; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free.
