Names as the assistants wrote them, grouped when they meant the same business. One run per question: answers change from run to run, so treat this as a snapshot. We are not affiliated with any business listed and don't rank or endorse them. How we measure
What ChatGPT and other assistants named for Portland hearing aid stores
Our data On October 14 we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot six questions someone in Portland, Oregon might ask about hearing aid specialists. All 24 answers came back, and they were concentrated: 35 different names in total, 14 of them named only once, and 10 named by all four assistants. This is one run per question, so read the counts as a snapshot, not a ranking.
Pacific Audiology Clinic was named in 21 of 24 answers: in every answer from ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, and in 3 of 6 from Google AI Mode. Mt Hood Hearing followed with 16 answers, Hearing Resources Audiology Center with 10 and Koru Hearing with 9, all named by every assistant. National chains came next: HearingLife in 8 answers, Miracle-Ear in 7 and HearUSA in 5.
For a hearing aid practice, this means a few names took most of the space, and a new or small clinic competes for the remaining places in each answer.
Brands mixed in with clinics
Of the 10 names that all four assistants used, 4 were hearing aid brands rather than places to go: Phonak, Oticon, Resound and Widex. They came up mostly in the question about modern Bluetooth hearing instruments, where Gemini named 13 names, most of them brands, and Copilot even named individual models. A university hospital program (OHSU), the Costco Hearing Aid Center and a charity, the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation, also appeared. All names in an answer are counted, so the list is wider than just local specialists.
Chains for today, local clinics for reputation
The type of question changed which kind of business was named. For "open appointments available near me today", ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Copilot all named the national chains HearUSA, HearingLife and Miracle-Ear; only Gemini answered with local clinics. A few entries in ChatGPT's list here were link labels rather than businesses, such as "Website and appointments".
For the most trusted and experienced specialist based on reviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot named exactly the same three clinics: Pacific Audiology Clinic, Mt Hood Hearing and Koru Hearing, in different orders. And asked for "the top local alternatives to Miracle-Ear", all four assistants named Miracle-Ear itself first. A question built around a brand returns that brand too.
Google AI Mode answered with Google Maps places
Our data 5 of Google AI Mode's 6 answers came as Google Maps places: 19 places in total. Their average rating was 4.8 stars, and 95% had 4.5 stars or more. The median number of reviews was 122, and the place with the fewest had 11.
That does not show why a place was included. It does show that high ratings were common to nearly all of them, while a place with a small number of reviews could still be among them.
Where the names come from: websites cited for Portland hearing aid stores
Our data ChatGPT and Copilot attached source links to all 6 of their answers, Google AI Mode to 3, Gemini to none. The most-cited website was pacoregon.com (9 of 24 answers), which appears to be Pacific Audiology Clinic's own site. Next came hearinglife.com (6), threebestrated.com (5), hearusa.com and miracle-ear.com (4 each), and oregon.gov, consumeraffairs.com, reviews.birdeye.com and the HearingTracker forum (3 each). OHSU, the Northwest Ear Institute and a hearing aid maker's store locator were cited twice each.
So the sources here were a mix: the clinics' and chains' own websites, review and rating sites, a hearing aid forum, a state government site and a university hospital. Businesses' own pages were among the most-cited sources.
Where US hearing aid specialists are usually listed (advice): Google Business Profile (it feeds Google Maps), Yelp, Healthgrades and HearingTracker; the provider locators of the hearing aid makers you work with; and the Better Business Bureau. If you are an audiologist, a professional association directory is worth checking too.
How patients ask about Portland hearing aid stores
Our six questions covered seniors with severe hearing loss, Bluetooth hearing aids, fair prices, reputation based on reviews, same-day appointments and alternatives to Miracle-Ear. Patients and their families usually ask with more detail. Questions worth testing for your own practice, written the way people type them:
- "Audiologist in Beaverton who does free hearing tests for my dad"
- "Where can I get my hearing aids cleaned and repaired in Gresham? I bought them elsewhere"
- "Hearing aid specialist in Lake Oswego that takes my insurance"
- "Tinnitus help in Portland Oregon, who fits hearing aids for it?"
- "Hearing aid fitting at home for someone in assisted living in Portland"
Use the neighborhoods and suburbs you actually serve and the services you want more of. A question without a place in it can return clinics in another state.
Other tests in this series cover opticians in Boston and dentists in Denver.
What a hearing aid practice can check about how AI assistants name it
Advice: these checks are concrete and most take an hour or less. None of them can promise a mention; they make the facts about your practice easy to find and hard to get wrong.
- Name the brands you fit and service. List the hearing aid makers you work with, in text, and say whether you service devices bought elsewhere. Brand names came up in many answers, so this is how people connect a brand with your clinic.
- State who does the work. Audiologist (Au.D.) or licensed hearing aid specialist, with names, credentials and your Oregon license details. One question asked for the most experienced specialist.
- Explain your prices. One question asked for fair prices. Price ranges per device level, what is included (fitting, follow-up visits, cleaning), trial period and payment options can be stated in plain words.
- Make booking and hours obvious. If you take same-day or walk-in appointments, say so; if not, say how soon you usually can. In this run, the same-day question went mostly to national chains.
- Describe the people you serve. Severe hearing loss, tinnitus, cochlear implant referrals, children, home visits: a clear page for each group you actually help.
- Complete your Google Business Profile. 5 of 6 Google AI Mode answers in this run were Maps places. Check the category, hours, accessibility details, current photos, and that recent reviews have a reply where one is useful.
- Keep name, address and phone identical. Check Google Business Profile, Yelp, Healthgrades, manufacturer locators and your own site for the same practice name and phone number.
How to check if ChatGPT names your own practice
Write five or six questions your patients would ask, with Portland or your neighborhood in them and the services you offer, and ask several assistants the same questions. Note who is named and which websites are cited, then repeat in a few weeks, because the answers change. CheckAI checks your own customer questions across the same four assistants and shows the names and the cited websites for each answer; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free.
