Names as the assistants wrote them, grouped when they meant the same business. One run per question: answers change from run to run, so treat this as a snapshot. We are not affiliated with any business listed and don't rank or endorse them. How we measure
What the answers show about opticians in Boston
Our data On October 14 we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot six questions a customer in Boston might ask when looking for an optician or eyewear store. All 24 answers came back, and together they named 61 different stores, brands and services. 36 of those were named only once, but 8 stores were named by all four assistants, which is a lot for a local trade.
Spectacle was named in 14 of 24 answers, by all four assistants, and in every one of Google AI Mode's 6 answers. Point of U followed with 13 and Yosemite Eyewear with 9. South End Eye, Lunette Optic, LensCrafters, Cohen's Fashion Optical and Pro Optical each appeared in 7 answers; Pro Optical came only from Gemini and Copilot. This is one run per question, so read the counts as a snapshot, not a ranking.
So for Boston eyewear there was a recognizable core group, and a long tail of names that appeared once. Gemini gave the longest lists, 52 names across its 6 answers, against 34 to 38 for the others.
Brands, lens makers and online sellers
Many of the names were not stores. For the question about high-quality glasses, ChatGPT and Gemini listed frame brands such as Jacques Marie Mage, DITA, Garrett Leight, Oliver Peoples and Cutler and Gross next to the shops. Gemini's answer to the question about boutique alternatives to Warby Parker named 22 names, many of them frame brands. For progressive lenses, ChatGPT named lens makers (ZEISS, Varilux, Shamir) and Copilot named Essilor. Copilot also listed online sellers such as Zenni, EyeBuyDirect and GlassesUSA, and Gemini named Costco Wholesale for value.
The answers named frame and lens brands next to stores. As advice, state in text which brands you carry.
The alternatives question named Warby Parker
Asked for boutique alternatives to Warby Parker, ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini all named Warby Parker itself first, then other stores and brands. SEE Eyewear, Point of U, Spectacle and Yosemite Eyewear each appeared in three of those four answers.
Google AI Mode answered with Google Maps places
Our data All 6 of Google AI Mode's answers came as Google Maps places, 26 in total. Every one had 4.5 stars or more, the average was 4.9, the median number of reviews was 130, and the store with the fewest reviews had 64. That does not show that reviews are the reason a store was shown, only what the stores in these answers had in common.
Which websites the answers cite for opticians and eyewear stores
Our data ChatGPT and Copilot attached source links to all 6 of their answers, Google AI Mode to 1 and Gemini to none. The most-cited website was vieweyewear.com (6 of 24 answers), followed by checkbook.org, bostonpicks.com and moscot.com (3 each). Boston Magazine, cbsnews.com, reddit.com, reviews.birdeye.com and several stores' own websites, such as eyelevelboston.com, theopticalshopbrookline.com, proopticalboston.com and Target Optical's local pages, were cited twice each.
The sources mixed local "best of" lists and consumer ratings, city media and the stores' own sites. For the repair question, ChatGPT and Copilot cited mostly stores' own websites.
Where US opticians are usually listed (advice): Google Business Profile (it feeds Google Maps), Yelp, the provider locators of the vision insurance plans you accept (for example VSP or EyeMed), and the store locators of frame brands you are an authorized dealer for. Local media such as Boston Magazine choose their own picks, so you can't list yourself there, but you can check that what they say about you is correct.

How customers ask AI assistants about opticians in Boston
Our six questions covered quality, complex progressive lenses, value on designer frames, reputation and reviews, an urgent repair today, and alternatives to Warby Parker. Customers often add their insurance, a brand or a service. Questions worth testing, written the way people type them:
- "Optician in Back Bay Boston that takes VSP"
- "Where can I get an eye exam and new glasses in Cambridge MA this week?"
- "Independent eyewear store in Boston with Japanese titanium frames"
- "Kids glasses in Jamaica Plain, Boston"
- "Who can put new lenses in my own frames in Boston?"
Use your own neighborhood, the brands you carry and the services you offer. A question without a place in it can return online sellers instead of local stores.
What an optician can check to show up in AI answers
Advice: these checks are practical and most can be done in an afternoon. None of them can promise a mention; they make the facts about your store easy to find and hard to get wrong.
- List the brands you carry, as text. Frame brands and lens makers, by name, on a brands page. Many answers named brands next to stores; a logo wall in images does not say the same thing to someone reading the page as text.
- Say which insurance you accept. Vision plans you are in-network with, out-of-network paperwork, and whether FSA or HSA cards work. Customers often ask with their plan in the question.
- Explain eye exams. Whether an optometrist works on site, how to book an exam, and whether customers can bring a prescription from elsewhere.
- Give services their own page. Progressive lens fitting, repairs while you wait, new lenses in existing frames, adjustments, children's glasses, sports and safety eyewear. For the repair question, stores' own sites were the main sources.
- Keep hours and "open today" right. Check your site, Google Business Profile and Yelp for the same hours, including weekends and holidays. A question about an urgent repair today depends on them.
- Say what makes you different from the chains. Independent, curated brands, in-house lab, fitting expertise: write it in plain words. The alternatives question was answered with other stores after the well-known name itself.
- Check the lists that were cited. Open bostonpicks.com, Checkbook and Boston Magazine's eyewear pages. Are you listed, with the right address, hours and neighborhood?
How to check whether ChatGPT names your optical store
Write five or six questions your customers would ask, with Boston or your neighborhood in them, and ask several assistants. Note who is named, which brands appear and which websites are cited, then repeat in a few weeks, because the answers change. CheckAI checks your own customer questions across the same four assistants and shows the names and cited websites for every answer; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free. Our guide on how to check if ChatGPT names your business walks through the manual version.
