Names as the assistants wrote them, grouped when they meant the same business. One run per question: answers change from run to run, so treat this as a snapshot. We are not affiliated with any business listed and don't rank or endorse them. How we measure
What the answers show about marketing agencies in Minneapolis
Our data On October 14 we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot six questions a small business owner in Minneapolis might ask when looking for a marketing agency. All 24 answers came back, and together they named 77 different agencies. 62 of those were named only once. It was one run per question, so read the counts as a snapshot, not a ranking.
Only three agencies were named by all four assistants: Hook Agency in 14 of 24 answers, Skol Marketing and Agency Jet in 13 each. After them the counts drop sharply. Windmill Strategy, Rocket55 and WebFX were named in 4 answers each, Rocket55 only by Copilot. Brandpoint and Olive & Company came up in 3.
For an agency, this is the main finding: outside a small group, the answers rarely agreed. Copilot gave the longest lists: one of its answers held 15 names and another 11, while Google AI Mode never named more than 7 in one answer. A long list gives more agencies a mention, but each one sits further down.
Neighboring names and large agencies
Not every name was a small-business agency. In the question about helping local retail businesses grow online, Google AI Mode also named Shopify and Square, which are commerce platforms. Gemini named Carmichael Lynch and Colle McVoy, two large Minneapolis advertising agencies, when asked about reviews and track record. The answers mix agencies of very different sizes, so a small agency competes with names its clients may never actually hire.
The alternatives question named Brandpoint first
Asked about alternatives to Brandpoint, ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot each put Brandpoint itself first. Gemini also listed content and press release services such as Verblio, ClearVoice, PR Newswire and Business Wire, and Copilot named 15 businesses in that one answer.
Google Maps: high stars, solid review counts
Our data All 6 Google AI Mode answers came as Google Maps places, 21 agencies in total. Their average rating was 4.9 stars, and every one had 4.5 stars or more. The median place had 97 reviews; the one with the fewest had 11.
That does not explain why a particular agency was shown. It does show that the agencies in these Maps answers had both near-perfect ratings and, for most, a review count in the dozens or more. For a local agency, the Google Business Profile is part of the picture for local questions, not only the website.
Which websites the answers cite for marketing agencies
Our data ChatGPT and Copilot attached source links to all 6 of their answers, Google AI Mode to 3 and Gemini to 2. The most-cited website was clutch.co (7 of 24 answers), followed by expertise.com (5), goodfirms.co (4) and Semrush's agency directory at agencies.semrush.com (3). DesignRush, The Manifest, g2.com, minneapolismade.com and revenuebase.ai were cited in 2 answers each.
Agencies' own sites were cited too: skolmarketing.com in 5 answers and hookagency.com in 2. So the sources were mostly agency directories and "top agencies in Minneapolis" style lists, plus the websites of a few agencies. ChatGPT cited the widest range, up to 10 different websites in one answer, many of them agency homepages.
Where marketing agencies are usually listed and reviewed (advice): the Google Business Profile (it feeds Google Maps), agency directories such as Clutch, The Manifest, GoodFirms, DesignRush and Expertise.com, the agency directories and partner programs of the ad and marketing platforms you work with, LinkedIn company pages, and local business lists and chamber of commerce directories.
Related snapshots of what the assistants named: web design agencies in Nashville and IT support companies in Philadelphia.
How small businesses ask AI assistants about marketing agencies in Minneapolis
Our six questions covered a general recommendation, a specialty (small local retail businesses growing online), affordability, reviews and track record, availability right away, and alternatives to Brandpoint. Real buyers usually name their trade, their budget and the channel they need. Questions worth testing, written the way owners type them:
- "Marketing agency in Minneapolis that runs Google Ads for HVAC companies, budget around $2,000 a month"
- "Who can manage Instagram and Facebook for a restaurant in Northeast Minneapolis?"
- "SEO agency in St. Paul for a small law firm with a month-to-month contract"
- "Small agency in Edina that builds a website and does local SEO for a dental office"
- "Fractional marketing help for a B2B startup in Minneapolis, not a full agency retainer"
Use the trades, channels and suburbs you actually serve. A narrow question is where a specialist has the best chance to appear next to the three names above.
What a marketing agency can check to show up in AI answers
Advice: these checks are concrete and most take an afternoon. None of them can promise a mention; they make it easier for anyone reading about your agency, including the directories that were cited, to describe it correctly.
- Write case studies as text, not only as slides or video. Client type, starting point, what you did, time frame and the result the client agreed to publish, with a date. A case study that sits in a PDF or an image carousel is hard to quote.
- Give each service its own page. SEO, paid search, social media, email, websites: one page each, saying who it is for, what is included and what you deliver each month. A single "services" page with icons tells a reader little.
- Name the industries you really serve. One question asked for an agency that helps local retail businesses. If you have retail, restaurant or home services clients, a page per industry with linked case studies says so plainly. Leave out industries you have no work for.
- State how you price. One question asked for an affordable agency. Starting retainer, project fees, minimum contract length and whether there is a setup fee answer that question for a buyer, even as a range.
- Check your directory profiles. Open your Clutch, Expertise.com, GoodFirms, DesignRush and Semrush agency profiles. Are services, location, minimum project size and team size current, and do recent reviews mention the services you want to be known for?
- Keep the Google Business Profile complete. The Maps places in our answers had a median of 97 reviews. Check the primary category, address or service area, hours and photos, and ask satisfied clients for a review after a project milestone.
- Say when you can start. One question asked for an agency available immediately. If you take new clients, say how soon a first call and onboarding can happen. If you have a waiting list, say that instead.
How to check whether ChatGPT names your marketing agency
Write down five or six questions your best clients would ask, with Minneapolis or their suburb and the service they need, and ask several assistants. Note who is named, in which order, and which websites are cited, then repeat after a few weeks, because answers change. CheckAI checks your own customer questions across the same four assistants and shows the names and cited websites for every answer; a first check on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode is free. Our guide on how to check if ChatGPT names your business walks through the manual version.
